Today marked the start of the 12th edition of the Judo Winter Camp, an event that has become a true landmark for Judo enthusiasts eager to explore its most authentic roots. The atmosphere is electric – excitement, passion, and a strong desire to learn fill the air.
The day kicked off with a dive into the history of Judo. We traced the transition from Jujutsu to Judo, a monumental shift that goes beyond combat techniques. Jujutsu focused on techniques to win fights, whereas Judo, thanks to the vision of its founder Kano Jigoro, applies its principles to all aspects of life.
On the tatami, we focused on falls (Ukemi Waza), particularly working on Mae Mawari Ukemi (forward circular fall). It was fascinating to see how every detail matters and how safety comes through mastering control over one’s body.
The first training session led us into the world of Ashi Waza, techniques primarily involving the legs. Why such a strong focus on leg techniques? We uncovered the concept of “Judo Kodokan no Ashi”: in the first three Kyo of Gokyo, a full 50% of techniques are Ashi Waza.
One reflection that stood out to everyone was the difference between Jujutsu, which is more static, and Judo, which emphasizes mobility and dynamism. Jigoro Kano revolutionized everything by introducing the principle of Kuzushi – Tsukuri – Kake (Unbalancing – Preparation – Attack). This insight changed the game entirely!
In the afternoon, we will continue with Uchikomi, Nage Komi, and Randori. In short, the first day is just the beginning of an adventure that promises to reveal Judo in all its facets. We can’t wait to continue!
